Engagement & Building School Community
Although the morning announcements are only 10 minutes long, these 10 minutes can set the tone for the day. Much of what makes our morning news program so successful is the support we receive from our administrators. They fully support the program because they see how it gets students excited about what is happening at school. A critical piece of this has been tying the programming to the positive behavior initiatives in our schools.
Because students can use iDevices in combination with Dropbox, they have the freedom to instantly capture students engaging in behavior that administrators and teachers would like reinforced. These stories can be integrated into the morning announcements so quickly that the kids are excited to be caught being good.
The news team can also produce content that ties into the school's behavior focus. It is extremely powerful to show student-generated examples of "what not to do" and then show a real-life example of "what to do." Teachers are able to use newsteam-related content in Morning Meeting to generate lively discussions.
Providing a morning routine helps students get ready for the day and puts them in the ready-to-learn mindset. Teachers and students look forward to the morning broadcast; we gets lots of phone calls when there is a technical glitch!
Another benefit to the morning broadcast platform is that it gives a space to share important events and student work. Teachers and students are excited to work on projects that can be shown on the morning announcements. Kids clamor to create movies of a field trip or a visit from a police dog. First graders feel accomplishment as they watch their Seasons Fashion Show. English Language Learners feel a sense of pride when they are guest anchors providing bilingual support for the news during Hispanic Heritage Month. Students are engaged and motivated when they are given an authentic audience for their work. Those 10 minutes are quite powerful!
